Evaluating a UK retailer (ecommerce activity 3)

The next activity builds on last week's. I want you to evaluate a UK retailer and make comments on how well their site performs, how much it might have cost and the scale of revenue it might generate.

I want to try and get each of you to begin to think like an ecommerce consultant; able to assess an existing site and make recommendations for improvement. We will extend this in future sessions.

Every student should look at a different retailer. To find which retailer you have been allocated please consult the following list:

Retailer List For Ecommerce (44 KB)

Here are the questions you have to answer:

  1. What is the URL of the site you looked at?
  2. Discuss well the site reflects the brand and culture of the company? Think about the image and values that are expressed by the store.
  3. List 3 features of the site you like
  4. List 3 features of the site that could be improved
  5. Describe how easily a customer can use the site to make a complaint?
  6. How easily can you find your nearest store?
  7. In what ways does the site help customers choose a product?
  8. How much do you think the company spent on implementing this site?
  9. How long did the design and build of this site take?
  10. How much money would you expect this site to take in an average month? (Guess if necessary)

The deadline is midnight, Wednesday 21st October 2009.

All answers should be submitted via the following form:

Jonathan as u stated we cant use the us version of the stores. i was allocated Tesco, even though i type Tesco.co.uk it stills shows Tesco.com.
is that a problem or is it ok

Jonathan replies: Tesco.com IS the UK version. It's a UK store running on a .com domain - just like mine.

Hi Jonathan, Where can I find lecture 3 video? I have hunted for it but I don't know if I am just looking straight past it!
Thanks ,

Jonathan replies: Lecture 3 was given by Jarek Francek and it is up to him to make slides and notes available. I will ask him tomorrow and post a link.

Hi Jonathan, last weeks lecture was done by Jarek as you said and by the way I put my MacBook video recording Jarek as he was giving the lecture, but the sound is not the best. You can still listen but because the sound was recorded from the laptop and not an actual microphone then you can listen to other noises. I could show it to you and even give you the file on Thursday after the lecture if you wish. Have a good day

Jonathan replies: I would prefer it if you offered it to Jarek and he can publish if he wants to.

What do you think?
